Food

The ways we gather, grow and share food affects our well-being as well as the natural world.

Awards in Food

Maxwell/Hanrahan provides unrestricted awards to individuals working in the United States and demonstrating meaningful, real-world and hands-on experience with food. The awards support individuals whose work is under-recognized, at moments that are especially critical to the trajectory of their work. Awardees demonstrate exceptional creativity and potential to advance the broader field. They are educators and teachers, artisans and creators, protectors of resources, and leaders and organizers. Through their work, the future can be more resilient, vibrant and nourishing.

Food is culture.

The Foundation’s one-time, unrestricted awards amplify individuals’ voices and give awardees time and funding as they move their work forward. Candidates must be US-based and at a critical phase of their careers. The Foundation selects awardees based on:

  • Impact of their work on nutrition, education and access; environmental sustainability; and/or craft, cultural knowledge and tradition.
  • Creativity and innovation.
  • Timing.

The Foundation does not accept self-nominations. Invited nominators confidentially identify individuals, and a selection committee recommends awardees.

Grants in Food

The Foundation supports grants for Food Systems Fellowships and Internships, including experiential fellowships, scholarships, residencies and internships, at an array of US-based nonprofit organizations. Our goal is to provide early career support, generally post-high school, to people producing, educating and nourishing others through food.
