Thea Alvin
she/her Stone Sculptor & Stained Glass Morrisville, VT
About The Artist
Thea Alvin is a stone mason and sculptor specializing in arch construction, large-scale sculptural installation, stone building, and, most recently, stained glass, building on her unique style and perspective of stonework, design, installation, team leadership and teaching in the trades.
Alvin has been a stone mason since 1986 and sculptor since 1998. First apprenticing seven years under master masons, then branching out to study stonework internationally in England, Canada, Italy, China and Mexico. She settled comfortably into a unique style and perspective of stone work, design, installation and team leadership.
She has been teaching with Yestermorrow Design/Build School since 2008. She enjoys teaching The Art of Stone and Masonry Oven Programs annually and also Historic Restoration in Italy. Alvin specializes in arch construction and large scale sculptural installations at Universities and Galleries across the US. Internationally, she specialized in stone building and roof systems.
More recently, Alvin has taken a deep dive into stained glass. Initially, taking a course at Yestermorrow which was quickly followed by setting up a home studio. She now has more than 4000 hours working, to shape new perspective on color theory that stone alone could not give.
She lives on her 1810 restored farm in Northern Vermont with two dogs, nine goats, seven fish and thirty-something chickens. The farm has seen countless courses and workshops to complete the restoration process and is now a sculpture park, open by appointment.
About The Work
My work as a stone mason has inspired my work as a sculptor. The trade of laying stone on stone, for me, has evolved into a wholistic practice of seeing beauty in the composition of each piece of work and a strengthening of my voice as a creative and teacher. My capacity to reach tradespeople with my strong clear voice keeps them inspired and moving forward in their craft.
