Timothy J. Colston’s integrative approach to science has far-reaching implications that span across disciplines. He is an evolutionary biologist focused on the diversity, ecology and conservation of amphibians and reptiles. His contributions to the field include biodiversity assessments, molecular systematics and trait evolution. Colston’s particular interest in tropical snakes has driven him to participate in and lead field expeditions to Africa and many countries in Latin America, where he has named a dozen new species, including lizards, snakes and frogs. His innovative work on the microorganism diversity (microbiomes) of snakes is leading to breakthroughs in our understanding of the interactions between environments, microbes and host species.

Colston is an associate professor at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, where he also serves as the director of their Genomic Resources Collection.
